Currently there are 169,387 confirmed cases of COVID-19 worldwide, and more than 30 million American children will stay home as schools close across the United States on Monday.[1] American life has been put on hold as we know it, with a large majority of bars, restaurants and large gatherings all ceased in major cities.
Financially, The Federal Reserve took drastic measures on Sunday night and cut the benchmark interest rate to zero in an effort to stabilize the markets. It appears this helped little as stocks plunged with the S&P 500 down 10.01% as of 10:30ET this morning, according to the Wall Street Journal.
So, what does this all mean for you?
You’ve probably established some financial goals by now and if you’re able, you should continue to maintain the discipline developed through the years. Try to focus on the long-term and not short-term fluctuations of the market.
And of course, if you’re nearing retirement, you don’t want all your hard-earned money washed away in the current market turmoil!
